about

“Deceptively simple, devastatingly elegant, and dead serious.”
Bobby Previte
Composer, Drummer, Bandleader

About:
Wiki Catchphrase Entry:
"a phrase or expression recognized by its repeated utterance. Such phrases often originate in popular culture and in the arts, and typically spread through word of mouth and a variety of mass media (such as films, internet, literature and publishing, television and radio). Some become the de facto or literal "trademark" or "signature" of the person or character with whom they originated, and can be instrumental in the typecasting of a particular actor. "

In his own words:
When I arrived at my first ever "official” artist residency I quickly realized I had too many objectives. After frantically work shopping audio reactive video software, MIDI guitar, and looping devices I hit roadblocks and I got frustrated. After many painstaking days of sitting in my own disbelief I made the call to dismiss my lofty ambitions of serving the “electronic age” and I shifted my focus to the craft of deconstructing the concept of the guitar in society; it's toxic connotations, overly abused weaponry, and dismissal of it’s lovely vibrations. In the mornings I would sit in the sun with coffee and a sketchbook and write for hours. I stretched. I jogged. I sometimes didn’t jog and instead cried whilst screaming at the four walls surrounding me. To balance all this anxiety I cooked meals and ate them whilst listening to Charlie Christian, Lenny Breau, Nels Cline and John Fahey, to name a few. I paid my respect to the beautiful lineage of players and makers of a discipline I’ve been at since I was a kid. Then and I cried some more.
At some point I felt as if I was making some headway and I entered a steady routine. I did my best to scrummage through the guitar etudes of Villa Lobos. I would even sometimes read through the luscious Bach’s Chorales late at night after binge sight-reading the Slonimsky thesaurus…. all the while interspersing my studies with the words and practices of Cage and Oliveros. Throughout this process I began to rediscover my initial love of the tactile and inherently woodsy nature of the acoustic guitar. I’ve always known there are infinite worlds to discover within 6 strings and a resonator. I just somehow lost that in the midst of trying to be a “professional.” I then continued to mine for a stable re-connection with my instrument and while facing white fragility head on and began to compose from that space. After a week or so of writing I set out to record 2 pieces a day. The result is 32 minutes of 8 songs accompanied by two music videos that I shot myself and then later edited at home in Portland two years later.
